In Case of an Emergency
- In an emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department.
- Call Telehealth at 1-866-797-0000. Telehealth Ontario is a free, confidential service you can call to get health advice or information. A Registered Nurse will take your call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Telehealth Ontario nurses will not diagnose your illness or give you medicine; they will direct you to the most appropriate level of care or may put you in contact with a health professional who can advise you on your next steps. The nurse will help you decide whether to: handle a problem yourself, visit your doctor or nurse practitioner, go to a clinic, contact a community service or go to a hospital emergency room.
- If you are ENROLLED with your physician (signed a government form) you can call the Telephone Health Advisory Service (THAS) at 1-866-553-7205, AFTER HOURS - 5pm to 9am and WEEKENDS - Friday 11am to Monday 9am. You will speak with a nurse, who if necessary can speak with your physician, or another physician on call who is a part of the Family Health Organization to address you needs. This may save you a trip to an urgent care clinic.
Referrals and Investigations
What happens when I am referred to a specialist for consultation?
The office will fax your referral to the specialist office.
The wait time for our office to receive an appointment back from the specialist office varies. Typically, it takes a minimum of 4 weeks before our office is contacted with a consultation date and time. If you have not heard from our office or the specialist office after 4 weeks, you may contact our office to discuss the status of your referral.
Please note that our office receives a large volume of consultation appointments to notify patients of. Therefore, patients are notified of consultations in up-coming priority, with appointments scheduled within the coming month being contacted first. Patients are welcome to contact our office at anytime to inquire about the status of your appointment.
Once you have been contacted by either our office or the specialist's office with your consultation date and time, it is your responsibility to ensure that you record and attend your appointment date and time. Most specialist office's charge a significant fee for missed appointments and will not reschedule the appointment until the fee has been paid.
What happens when I am referred for investigative, diagnostic studies i.e X-Ray, Ultrasound, CT scan, MRI?
Blood work, Urinalysis, ECG/EKG, Spirometry: you will be given a requisition and you can attend a lab of your choice for the test. Most labs do not require an appointment for most tests. Not all Labs perform ECG/EKG or Spirometry.
X-ray, ultrasound, mammogram, bone mineral density(BMD): you will be given a requisition and you can attend an Imaging Centre of your choice. X-ray and bone mineral density(BMD) are typically walk-in and do NOT require an appointment. Ultrasound and mammogram require an appointment; you will need to call the location of your choice to arrange this appointment.
Echocardiogram, Holter Monitor, Bone Scan, Urgent Venous Doppler, CT scan and MRI are arranged by the office.
